Ecological assessments, black cockatoo and fauna surveys

Ecological assessments look at the whole site: its fauna, wetlands, waterways and foreshores, and how a proposal might affect them. In the South West that very often means habitat for black cockatoos and the Western Ringtail Possum, both protected under state and federal law.

Eco Logic carries out targeted assessments and prepares the management plans that councils and regulators require, from wetland and foreshore plans to conservation covenant advice.

Questions

Why do black cockatoos matter for my project?

Carnaby’s, Baudin’s and Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoos are listed as Threatened under the EPBC Act and occur across the South West. Clearing their feeding, roosting or breeding habitat can trigger federal referral requirements, so a habitat assessment is often needed before clearing.

What does a Western Ringtail Possum assessment involve?

It looks for evidence of possums and their habitat on and around the site, such as dreys, scats and suitable vegetation, and considers how the proposal could affect them. The findings feed into approvals and any management measures.
